CARTA DE FERNANDO GARAVITO SOBRE VINCULACIÓN

DE ÁLVARO URIBE A GEORGETOWN


"SORPRENDE QUE CÁTEDRA SOBRE DEMOCRACIA

CAIGA EN MANOS DE QUIEN HA EJERCIDO

UN LIDERAZGO PERVERSO"

El periodista, escritor y abogado colombiano Fernando Garavito Pardo envío al presidente de Georgetown University, John J. Degioia, la siguiente misiva en la que hace algunas reflexiones en torno de la vinculación del ex mandatario de Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Vélez a ese centro de estudios superiores, regentado por la Compañía de Jesús, en calidad de catedrático sobre temas como democracia y liderazgo global.

Noticias de prensa dan cuenta de que el señor Álvaro Uribe, ex presidente de Colombia, dictará clases en el Walsh School para Servicios Extranjeros de esa Universidad a partir del próximo otoño. El dato tiene numerosas implicaciones éticas que ignoro si han sido evaluadas en forma suficiente por Georgetown University.

El señor Uribe fue Presidente de Colombia por espacio de ocho años. Durante ellos, dos frentes de la actividad pública entraron en un período crítico: el primero, la corrupción administrativa; el segundo, el atropello sistemático a los derechos de la oposición y a los Derechos Humanos.

No soy un enemigo del señor Uribe. Soy, simplemente, un colombiano a quien le preocupa que la enseñanza sobre lo que es un "liderazgo global" en una de las instituciones educativas más prestigiosas del mundo, caiga en manos de quien ha ejercido un liderazgo perverso. En este momento mi hija Manuela comienza sus estudios universitarios en este país. Ella quiere participar en la vida pública de los Estados Unidos, una nación que le ha abierto con generosidad las puertas que el señor Uribe y su régimen le cerraron en Colombia. Si por alguna circunstancia ella hubiera entrado a Georgetown y uno de sus profesores fuera el señor Uribe, yo no dudaría un solo momento en pedirle que se retirara de esa institución.

No quisiera, sobra decirlo, establecer contra él ninguna clase de censura. Por el contrario, me parece que está en la obligación de rendir cuentas sobre sus hechos, que muchos en mi país califican como "crímenes". Pero esa rendición de cuentas debe darla ante un tribunal de justicia. En Colombia se prepara ahora mismo un auto cabeza de proceso contra él, que se dirigirá a la Corte Penal Internacional. Pienso que hasta que no se decida su situación jurídica, él no puede estar al frente de una cátedra donde se imparta cualquier tipo de instrucción a quienes él mismo llama "futuros líderes".

Me encantaría debatir con el señor Uribe sobre algunos de estos temas ante la comunidad universitaria. Estoy dispuesto a trasladarme a Washington cuando usted considere que ese debate puede darse. Los estudiantes tienen derecho de saber quiénes son, qué representan y qué pueden enseñar quienes van a ser sus profesores. Mi hoja de vida es insignificante frente a la que podrá mostrar el señor Uribe. Soy, simplemente, uno de los periodistas a quienes él y el régimen que impera en Colombia, condenaron al silencio.

Pienso que una de las tareas que tienen las directivas universitarias es defender a la comunidad puesta a su cuidado. El nombramiento del señor Uribe como maestro de Georgetown es un peligro para la formación ética de los estudiantes.

Esteemed Mr. President:

Press reports indicate that Mr. Alvaro Uribe, ex-president of Colombia, will teach classes at the Walsh School for Foreign Service beginning this fall. This news has many ethical implications that I'm not sure have been sufficiently considered by Georgetown University.

Mr. Uribe was President of Colombia for eight years. During these years, two areas of public policy reached critical proportions: first, administrative corruption; second, systematic trampling of the rights of the opposition and of human rights.

I am not an enemy of Mr. Uribe. I am, simply, a Colombian who is concerned that the teaching of "global leadership" in one of the world's most prestigious educational institutions, fall into the hands of one who has exercised perverse leadership. At this time my daughter Manuela is beginning her university studies here in this country. She wants to participate in the public life of the United States, a country which has generously opened to her the doors that Mr. Uribe and his regime closed to her in Colombia. If by some chance she were studying at Georgetown and one of her professors were Mr.Uribe, I would not hesitate for one moment to ask her to withdraw from that institution.

I want to be clear: I have no desire to establish any form of censorship against Mr. Uribe. On the contrary, it seems to me that he has the obligation to give an accounting of his acts, which many people in my country consider to be "crimes." But this accounting must be given before a court of law. In Colombia at the moment preliminary documents for criminal proceedings are being prepared against him to be presented to the International Criminal Court. I believe that until his legal status is determined, he should not hold a chair at any institution which offers instruction to those whom he himself describes as "future leaders."

I would welcome an opportunity to debate some of these matters with Mr. Uribe before the university community. I am prepared to travel to Washington whenever you may call for such a debate. Your students have the right to know who their professors are, what they represent and what they have to teach them. My resume is insignificant compared to Mr. Uribe's. I am, simply, one of the journalists whom he and the reigning powers of Colombia condemned to silence.

I believe that one of the obligations of university leadership is to defend the community placed under its care. The appointment of Mr. Uribe as a member of the Georgetown faculty is a threat to the ethical training of your students.
